Job Description

A Draftsman / Cost Estimator typically combines skills in drafting and cost estimation to support construction or engineering projects. Below is an outline of their key duties and responsibilities:


1. Drafting Duties:

  • Create technical drawings: Produce detailed architectural, structural, or engineering drawings based on project specifications and requirements.
  • Use CAD software: Utilize CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to develop 2D and 3D models of buildings, systems, and structures.
  • Review and revise drawings: Regularly review and update plans to ensure accuracy and compliance with client specifications and building codes.
  • Collaborate with engineers and architects: Work closely with engineers and architects to incorporate design changes or improvements into drafts.
  • Prepare construction documents: Generate documents needed for construction, including plans, blueprints, and diagrams.

2. Cost Estimation Duties:

  • Prepare cost estimates: Analyze project plans, blueprints, and other documents to prepare accurate and detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, and other project expenses.
  • Quantity takeoff: Measure and calculate quantities of materials and resources needed for the project.
  • Cost analysis: Research costs of materials, labor, and equipment to ensure estimates are competitive and reflect current market prices.
  • Prepare bid packages: Develop comprehensive cost estimates and proposals for bidding purposes, including breakdowns of materials, labor, and overhead costs.
  • Cost comparison: Compare estimated costs with actual project expenses and assist in cost control during construction.
  • Track changes: Update cost estimates when there are design changes or unforeseen project delays or issues.

3. Project Coordination:

  • Collaborate with project teams: Work with construction managers, engineers, contractors, and clients to discuss plans, timelines, and cost estimates.
  • Maintain project documentation: Keep accurate records of project documents, changes, and approvals to ensure compliance and easy access.
  • Monitor project budget: Help track expenditures during the course of a project to keep it within budget.
  • Assist with scheduling: Estimate timelines for the procurement of materials and labor to ensure timely project completion.

4. Technical Support:

  • Provide technical assistance: Offer technical support and advice to the project team regarding the construction process, material selections, and design challenges.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance: Ensure all designs and estimates comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Problem solving: Identify and resolve issues that arise during the drafting or estimation processes, ensuring minimal project disruptions.

5. Reporting and Analysis:

  • Prepare reports: Provide regular reports on project progress, costs, and potential risks to stakeholders and management.
  • Review project budgets: Evaluate project budgets for accuracy and ensure estimates are within scope and aligned with project goals.
  • Forecast costs: Anticipate potential changes in project scope or material costs and make recommendations to control future expenses.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit).
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, techniques, and cost estimation methods.
