The Electrical Technician is responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, repair, preventive maintenance, and testing of commercial kitchen equipment. The role ensures that all electrical systems and kitchen appliances operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and applicable electrical codes. The technician works closely with kitchen operations to minimize equipment downtime and maintain uninterrupted food service.

Key Responsibilities

Installation

  • Install, assemble, and commission commercial kitchen equipment, including ovens, fryers, grills, steamers, dishwashers, refrigeration units, mixers, and other food service equipment.
  • Install electrical wiring, conduits, breakers, switches, outlets, and control panels required for kitchen equipment.
  • Read and interpret electrical diagrams, wiring schematics, and equipment manuals.
  • Verify proper electrical connections, voltage, grounding, and equipment functionality before commissioning.
  • Ensure all installations comply with electrical codes, manufacturer specifications, and workplace safety standards.

Troubleshooting and Repair

  • Diagnose electrical and control system faults in kitchen equipment using testing instruments such as multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers, and circuit analyzers.
  • Repair or replace defective electrical components, including motors, heating elements, relays, contactors, thermostats, sensors, timers, switches, transformers, and circuit boards.
  • Identify root causes of equipment failures and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Respond promptly to emergency equipment breakdowns to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Test repaired equipment to verify proper operation before returning it to service.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on commercial kitchen equipment according to maintenance plans.
  • Inspect electrical wiring, terminals, connectors, motors, heating elements, and control systems for wear or damage.
  • Clean electrical components and ensure proper calibration of equipment controls where applicable.
  • Lubricate mechanical components as required and replace worn electrical parts before failure.
  • Maintain maintenance records, service reports, and equipment history.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow electrical safety procedures, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and company safety policies.
  • Ensure equipment is properly grounded and protected against electrical hazards.
  • Comply with local electrical regulations, occupational health and safety standards, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Report unsafe equipment conditions and recommend corrective actions.

Documentation and Coordination

  • Complete work orders, maintenance logs, inspection reports, and repair documentation accurately.
  • Coordinate with kitchen staff and supervisors to schedule maintenance activities with minimal operational impact.
  • Recommend equipment upgrades, replacement parts, and preventive maintenance improvements.
  • Maintain an inventory of electrical tools, spare parts, and maintenance materials.
