Description

The Tax Accountant will assist in the North American tax function, focusing on metrics and deliverables, and looking for efficiencies and improvements along the way. This includes but is not limited to handling tax accounting processes such as tax returns and tax analyses. As a key member of the tax department, you will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with tax regulations, optimizing our tax position, and contributing to the overall financial health of the company.

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Assist the Director of Taxation with the tax compliance function in the US and Canada, to ensure timely, accurate, and complete reporting.
  • Partner with Legal on a routine basis regarding preparation and review of US Federal and State non-resident withholding on real estate dispositions (i.e., FIRPTA).
  • Respond to US Federal, State and Canadian tax notices and assessments to resolve in a timely manner.
  • Prepare, maintain, and streamline accurate and organized tax records, supporting documentation, and workpapers to facilitate audits and support the compliance process.
  • Ensure global tax returns and payments are processed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including finance, legal, and operations, to gather necessary information and support tax-related initiatives.
  • Gain competent knowledge of US Corporate, US International, US Partnership, Canadian Corporate and Canadian Partnership tax rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrate initiative, vision, resourcefulness, creativity, and independent thinking.
  • Maintain general knowledge of accounting, financial statements, internal controls, and professional standards (GAAP, GAAS, IFRS, etc.).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Flexible to work outside of normal business hours when necessary.

Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or Taxation is required.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of progressive and related experience in Tax Accounting, construction and/or real estate experience preferred. 
  • Knowledge of current US tax legislation, additional knowledge in Canadian tax legislation is also preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as the ability to work well with stakeholders and communicate the benefits of tax initiatives.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Office preferred/Microsoft Excel experience required).
  • Proven competence with MS Office and tax compliance and research software (Checkpoint).
