Description

Security and safety officers have many duties and responsibilities, including:


Safety measures

  • Safety officers ensure compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines. They advise on safety measures, conduct risk assessments, and enforce preventative measures. 


Incident investigation

  • Safety officers investigate incidents to improve overall safety. For example, construction safety officers investigate accidents to determine their causes. 


Emergency response

  • Security officers are first responders to incidents, dealing with distress calls, disruptive activities, or emergency alarms quickly and appropriately. 


Security and safety precautions

  • Security officers advise their employers of security and safety precautions that should be taken. 


Security of premises

  • Security officers secure the premises and personnel by patrolling property, monitoring surveillance equipment, and access points. 


Traffic control

  • Security officers control traffic by directing drivers. 


Reporting

  • Security officers complete reports by recording observations, information, occurrences, and surveillance activities. 


Coordination with law enforcement

  • Security officers coordinate with law enforcement as necessary.
