- Driving: Safely operating a truck and following traffic laws and regulations
- Loading and unloading: Using lifting devices to load and unload cargo, and ensuring it's secured
- Planning: Planning routes and meeting delivery schedules
- Maintaining: Performing daily maintenance, such as refueling and cleaning, and inspecting the truck for safety issues
- Documenting: Recording cargo deliveries, keeping logs, and completing work and delivery orders
- Communicating: Coordinating with dispatchers and interacting with customers
- Reporting: Reporting any accidents, defects, or violations
- Complying: Adhering to company policies and procedures
- Driving record
- A clean driving record is important. However, minor traffic citations usually won't disqualify you.
- Experience
- While experience isn't strictly required, it can help you perform better. Experienced drivers can demonstrate their ability to maintain a clean driving record, stay fit, and handle dangerous situations.
- Physical fitness
- You'll need to be physically fit and able to lift and move heavy cargo.
- Training
- You'll need to complete a training program that includes classroom instruction and hands-on driving experience.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- You'll need to pass a written test, a driving test, and a physical exam to obtain your CDL.
- Endorsements
- You may need to obtain endorsements for specialized driving, such as hazardous materials or tanker driving.
